Warcraft (9/30/2016)

Rated PG-13 for extended sequences of intense fantasy violence.

Starring Travis Fimmel, Ben Foster, Paula Patton, Dominic Cooper and Toby Kebbell

Directed by Duncan Jones (Source Code)

Dynamic ImageThe peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home. So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

I have never played World of Warcraft, and I was completely lost in this action packed fantasy film. I will admit that if I had ever played the game I may have really enjoyed this film. I say that because I want to be fair. There was so little about this film that I understood and even less I cared about.

There is not much of an introduction; you are just thrown into a world of orcs, humans and wizards. I literally felt like I walked into the theater late. I don’t remember the last time I was so lost watching a movie.

But there is a massive fan base, and I’m assuming many of them loved this. I would think that they liked the cast. I’m a pretty big fan of Travis Fimmel and Ben Foster. I will say this is definitely not their best work.

The effects were ok I guess. Honestly, it got to a point where it just felt like a lot of grunting and smashing things. The battle scenes felt cliché and very loud. The dialogue ranges between silly and ridiculous. And although I’m sure there was a story, I’m still not sure what it was.

Warcraft was a mess and I strongly recommend “Skipping It.”

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
There is no sex or nudity, and the language is very mild. But there is a lot of fantasy action and violence. There are epic battle sequences similar to those in Lord of the Rings and they are brutal and bloody.

CONVERSATIONS STARTER:

  1. What were some examples of sacrifice shown in the film?

  2. When was the last time you demonstrated sacrifice for someone else?

  3. Why is it so difficult to sacrifice for others?

  4. Read 1 Corinthians 10:24

Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.

  5. How can you seek the good of others over your own good?
