Starring Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz, Bobby Moynihan, John Leguizamo, Dianne Wiest, James Brolin and John Cena

Directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect)

Dynamic ImageThis raunch-fest has very few laughs and even less redeeming value.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reunite for Sisters, a new film from Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore about two disconnected sisters summoned home to clean out their childhood bedroom before their parents sell the family house. Looking to recapture their glory days, they throw one final high-school-style party for their classmates, which turns into the cathartic rager that a bunch of ground-down adults really need.

I’ve always considered myself a fan of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, but I didn’t enjoy this film at all. There is no question that they are two very funny women. They were hilarious on Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock and Parks and Rec, but this was something very different. There were a handful of laughs, but most scenes were cringe worthy trash. On the other hand, I’ve never been a fan of Maya Rudolph and I didn’t think she was funny at all in this one. I will admit (and I am a little embarrassed to admit this), but Bobby Moynihan was really funny. I mean we all have that one friend who thinks they are funny, but they really aren’t.

I also have to say that Dianne Wiest and James Brolin were surprisingly bad. I don’t necessarily want to hear Tina and Amy drop the F-bomb, but watching those two senior citizens do it was not funny at all.

The story is just as disappointing. We see so many characters making so many unwise decisions and suffering little to no consequences. There is a lot of sexual content, drugs and alcohol. And the film is completely void of responsible adults…in fact the most levelheaded character is Kate’s teenage daughter.

The sad truth is this could have been a hilarious movie about two sisters who truly care about each other; instead we got a raunchy two-hour “Coaster.”

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
No. The film contains numerous jokes of sexual nature, with frequent references to genitalia and sexual acts. There is also a scene of implied sexual activity when a man stands behind his wife in a crowd and verbally establishes that he is having sex with her. However, the act is implied mainly through their facial expressions.

There are also an excessive amount of F-words and other profanities.

CONVERSATION STARTER:

  1. How would you describe the decisions that Kate often makes?

  2. What are some immature or unwise decisions that you’ve made?

  3. Read Proverbs 12:15

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

  4. Where do you get your advice from?

  5. What can you do to make wise decisions?
