Lifehouse – “Everything”

Main Point: There is absolutely nothing that can keep us from the love of Jesus. He has given His life to rescue us from sin so that we can spend the rest of our life and eternity with Him.

The Discussion Starter: Lifehouse’s Everything
There are millions of videos on YouTube, but few of them can compare to the song/drama entitled “Everything” by Lifehouse. In 2006 at a Christian conference, a drama team performed this skit set to the tune of Lifehouse’s song. Since then, it has been viewed almost 20 million times online.

This song/drama needs no setup or introduction; it focuses on a girl who has been created by Jesus, but then separated from Him by temptation and sin. The video crescendos when Jesus rescues her from ALL of her woes and attackers in a dramatic fashion.

This video is a stand-alone ministry element. However, it is definitely best if the video is shared and then the Gospel proclaimed afterword.

Transitional Statement:
Almost every time I watch that clip, I get goose bumps. I love how dramatic it is, and also how realistic it is. Sadly, for millions of teenagers, those temptations are real issues they face. But the good news is, Jesus Christ is just as powerful as that video makes Him out to be. For the next few minutes, I want us to hover on one truth, and it’s this: there is absolutely nothing that can keep us from the love of Jesus. He has given His life to rescue us from sin so that we can spend the rest of our lives and eternities with Him. If that good news sounds too good to be true, take a walk with us through just one passage in the Bible and see what you think, then.

Discussion Questions:

1. AROUND THE CIRCLE: As we get started, let’s all take a second to share our names and one of our most-treasured pleasures in life.


2. ASK A FEW: What were some of the temptations used against the girl in the video? (Leaders – Money, romance, alcohol, self-image, self-injury, etc.)


3. ASK A FEW: How easy was it for the girl to get distracted from Jesus?


4. ASK A FEW: Why couldn’t the girl get back to Jesus on her own power?


5. ASK A FEW: What do you think it made her feel like when she couldn’t get back to Jesus?


6. ASK A FEW: Have you ever felt like the girl, distanced or isolated from Jesus? If so, what was that like?


7. ASK A FEW: Did Jesus ever stop desiring her and wanting her…even though she chose someone else instead of Him? Why?


8. ASK A FEW: Were any of the temptations too great for Jesus to withstand in rescuing her? Why not?

Read the following passage:

Romans 8:31-39 (NIV)

If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all– how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died– more than that, who was raised to life– is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.



9. ASK A FEW: If you had to put this passage in your own words – sorta like a summation – how would you do it?


10. ASK A FEW: What does the Apostle Paul mean when he asks, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Leaders – This was Paul’s way of saying, “There is NOTHING that can stand against us.”)


11. ASK A FEW: What does this passage say that Christ Jesus is doing for us RIGHT NOW? And what does that mean? (Leaders – If the students need a hint, send them to verse 34.)


12. ASK A FEW: What does Paul say can separate us from the love of Christ?


13. ASK A FEW: Granted, you may not be facing nakedness, sword, or persecution, but there are definitely things in life that are trying to separate you from Jesus. What are some of those things?


14. ASK A FEW: Can this passage be interpreted as saying “nothing bad will ever happen to you as long as you live”? Why or why not?


15. ASK A FEW: What kind of assurance does this passage give you?
