Fast Challenge

A challenge for students to make the most out of their fast.

Supplies:

  • Dry erase board or big paged flip chart

  • Markers

Ask your students what they like to do when they come home from school to help them wind down, or chill out. As they answer out loud, write down the answers to their post-school rituals on the board/page with the markers. Make sure to write big enough for everyone to see.

When all of the students have had a chance to list what they do to fill their afternoons, transition into a teaching mode by saying, “There is nothing wrong with most of these activities listed here. But, there is nothing about many of them that’s good either. They are just “simple things” we do to fill our time. What if we could do something with our time that would drastically improve our relationship with God?

Before going into a teaching on fasting, challenge the students to spend the time they would be on the Internet, listening to music, or playing video games on something much more life transforming: meditating on God’s Word. Remember, doing without something is NOT fasting. Fasting only happens when we substitute in time with God and His Word for something we usually do.

Very good way of introducing a fast to children. I am trying to do a weekend retreat and fasting is apart of the weekend so thanks for this opener. It will definitely help to break the ice!
