Underworld: Awakening (5/8/2012)

Rated R for strong violence and gore, and for some language.

Starring Kate Beckinsale

Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein

They made another Underworld movie?? Yep, this is number four.

Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.
Milla Jovovich may have the zombie post-apocalypse covered with the Resident Evil franchise but the war between vampires and werewolf is all Kate Beckinsale’s. And everyone knows that vampires are “hot” right now…but there are no love stories here. This is serious business.

Kate Beckinsale is back and kicking butt in her trademark bodysuit and twin automatic handguns. But I need to ask…how many werewolves can you watch her kill? After four movies…I’m thinking I can’t watch too many more.

Sure each movie has a different story line, but let’s be honest. It’s the over-the-top violence that drives the audience to these movies. And trust me; there is plenty of violence in this one. As this sequel begins, Selene has been cryogenically frozen for 12 years, and humans have been systematically purging the world of the vampires and lycans who have lived among us for centuries. Once she’s awake, it’s an all out assault on humans, lycans and even some vampires.

Awakening ends with a Matrix-like attack on a medical facility overseen by the double-crossing Dr. Lane (Stephen Rea). The last 10 minutes have more “blood” splatter than most movies have in 2 hours.

There’s not much to this movie beyond the special effects violence, so I’m saying it’s worth watching only if you are a fan of the franchise or if it’s free.

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT
Where Selene comes out of the cryogenic chamber, she is clearly naked, but nothing is shown. There are about 4 F-words and a couple other profanities.

But it’s the violence and gore that earns the R-rating on this one.
