Rated PG for some mild rude humor.
Starring the voices of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, James Corden and Gwen Stefani
Directed by Walt Dohrn, Mike Mitchell (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, Shrek Forever After and Sky High)
Between the eye rolls, loud colors and silly story, Trolls gave me a massive headache.
From the creators of Shrek comes the most smart, funny, irreverent animated comedy of the year, DreamWorks’ Trolls. Enter their colorful, wondrous world populated by hilariously unforgettable characters and discover the story of the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomach. Featuring original music from Justin Timberlake, and soon-to-be classic mash-ups of songs from other popular artists, the film stars the voice talents of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Gwen Stefani, and many more. DreamWorks’ Trolls is a fresh, broad comedy filled with music, heart and hair-raising adventures.
Trolls are way-too-happy creatures who live in a carefree wonderland where everyone likes everyone and they spend their days hugging and singing and dancing. Sounds a lot like Canada.
I remember the trolls pencil toppers in high school and really thought the fad died sometime before graduation…but I guess I was wrong. And someone decided to make a full-length animated film.
So yes there is a story about “bad guys” – Bergens – who eat trolls. Yes, I said “eat” trolls. So if you have a 4-year-old…like I do, be prepared for that one. Throw in some juvenile humor (one troll poops cupcakes) and some super sugary versions of pop and R&B classics and you have Trolls.
Find your happy place…and trust me, this isn’t it. Trolls it is a “Coaster.”
SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
There is some potty humor, but other than that it is fine for kids.
CONVERSATION STARTER:
- How do the trolls treat one another?
- How do they treat their enemies?
- According to this passage, how are we to treat our “enemies”?
- How can you begin to love those who mistreat you?
- Who can you pray for right now?
Read Matthew 5:43-44
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
