Three Stooges, The (4/13/2012)

Rated PG for slapstick action violence, some rude and suggestive humor including language.

Starring Sean Hayes, Will Sasso, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jane Lynch, Kate Upton, Jennifer Hudson, Sofia Vergara and Larry David

Directed by Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly (Dumb and Dumber and Hall Pass)

This movie is so dumb, but I dare you to watch it without laughing.

Left on a nun’s doorstep, Larry, Curly and Moe grow up finger-poking, nyuk-nyuking and woo-woo-wooing their way to uncharted levels of knuckleheaded misadventure. Out to save their childhood home, only The Three Stooges could become embroiled in an oddball murder plot…while also stumbling into starring in a phenomenally successful TV reality show.

I am a fan of the Stooges…I own several DVD’s and even have the “Golfing Stooges” Christmas ornament. So I had mixed feelings about an updated version of these kings of slapstick comedy. But I have to say the Farrelly brothers along with Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos made a really funny and really clean movie.

It was obvious to me that they spent hours studying the original films, and they pull off their respected characters brilliantly. Even the younger Stooges are funny and played perfectly.

The jokes and puns are total cheese, but even the weakest joke (the iPhone gag) got a small laugh from my son and me. There is a story, but just like with the originals, this movie is all about physical humor and laughs.

My absolute favorite part of the film was Larry David as Sister Mary-Mengele. He is HILARIOUS!!

In fact the only thing I could have done without was the Jersey Shore cast. I know the Farrellys are just making fun of them…but I personally believe they deserve no screen time. So for that I’m dropping it down to a “Theater Worthy.”

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
This is a PG movie and most kids will find the frequent cartoonish violence funny. But just to be safe, the “directors” make an appearance at the end of the film to explain that the tools used to hit each other are made of rubber; they demonstrate how the hitting was performed safely.

Conversation Starter:

  1. What is one of the biggest things the Stooges are known for? (Slapstick comedy)

  2. So what are some of your favorite Stooges’ moves?

  3. Why are they always hitting each other?

  4. Can you imagine hitting someone with a sledge hammer every time you disagreed with them?

  5. When we have conflict with someone how do we respond?

  6. Read Romans 12:14-21

Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!

Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say,

“I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.

Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.”

Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

  7. According to this passage, how should we respond?

  8. What is one thing you can do this week to do all that you can to live in peace with everyone?
