Skeleton Key (11/15/2005)

Rated PG-13 for violence, disturbing images, some partial nudity and thematic material.

Directed by Iain Softley (K-PAX…)

Starring Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands, John Hurt, Peter Sarsgaard…

Even the phenomenal cast couldn’t save this one.

The twist ending was good…but I doubt that many will make it to the ending. The film was way too slow and the storyline didn’t hook you enough to wait for something exciting to happen. And to be honest…not much does.

A young woman helping care for an invalid in New Orleans finds herself caught in the middle of morbid going-ons centered around a group of Hoodoo (Not Voodoo, there’s a difference. Hoodoo is a practice, not a complete religion) practitioners.

The film wasn’t that great. And I’m not excited about all the Hoodoo content. Kids today are really searching for spiritual answers. This DVD actually offers a special section on Hoodoo and its history. It’s a documentary that makes it look like any other religion. “Church, Yoga,Hoodoo…whatever works.”

Skip this one. And make sure that your kids do too. There’s enough of Kate Hudson’s “partial nudity” and dark magic to fill their minds with for a while.

Side Note:
As said above, we recommend you skip this film. But on the occasion that your teen actually has already seen it, you may want to dialogue about the film with them. These questions below may be a help to you.
