Rated PG for thematic elements, some sensuality and language.
Directed by Ken Kwapis (Dunston Checks In, TV: The Office…)
Starring Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Blake Lively…
This film has some very great individual scenes…but as a whole it didn’t do it for me.
The movie is based on the young adult book, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, by Anne Brashares. As four best friends spend their first summer apart from one another, they share a magical pair of jeans. Yes, you read correctly – magical jeans. Yeah, I thought it was a little corny too. Despite the various shapes and sizes of the girls’ figures, each one of them fits perfectly into the pants. To keep in touch, they pass these pants to each other as well as the adventures they are going through while apart.
Magical pants aside, the film really had some good moments with an overall positive message.
But the film also had some moments that were pretty sexual in nature, like Lena’s spontaneous swim in her underwear with Kostos as well as most of Bridget’s exploits at soccer camp. The film had quite a bit of this content for a mere “PG” film.
SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
I won’t let my kids see it until high school, and that’s only if we see it together and talk about it afterwards. I want to explain some of the places where the film missed the “natural consequences of our behavior.”
