Pyramid, The (12/5/2014)

Rated R for some horror violence and bloody images.

Starring Ashley Hinshaw, James Buckley, Denis O’Hare and Daniel Amerman

Directed by Gregory Levasseur

Dynamic ImageThe tagline reads, “You only enter once.” And for that I am thankful.

Egypt’s ancient wonders have long cursed the intrepid explorers who’ve dared to uncover their secrets. But a team of U.S. archaeologists gets more than they bargained for when they unlock the horrific secrets buried in a pyramid unlike any the world has seen, and realize that they are not just trapped, but being hunted.

You know when you go into a movie knowing that it’s probably not going to be great but you’re still hopeful that it is at least entertaining? Well that’s how I went in to The Pyramid and came out wishing I trusted my instincts.

The film starts out like most in this genre. There is clear warning not to go into the “ominous building” but the characters can’t find an ounce of logic amongst them (because the movie would only be 10 minutes long). The characters are then picked off one at a time by creatures we don’t clearly see until the last 10-15 minutes and the moment we do see them we wish we never had.

The story line and the whole reason why the characters enter the pyramid are never fully developed. Two of them seem to be able to read Egyptian hieroglyphics, but they seem to miss some very big warnings.

Films like this really need to bring their A-game in the special effects department. Unfortunately, that was my least favorite part of the film. The effects are weak and prove to be a major letdown.

The story line is pretty weak, the cast is forgettable and special effects are terrible. The Pyramid is a “Coaster.”

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
There is no sex but there is a scene involving partial nudity when a woman undresses. There is a lot of violence and scary images throughout the film along with a few profanities.

Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.
