Rated R for strong disturbing violence, and for language.
Starring Kiele Sanchez, Frank Grillo, Zach Gilford, Carmen Ejogo
And Nicholas Gonzalez
Directed by James DeMonaco (the purge)
I don’t know what’s more terrifying, the fact that a movie like this is made or that teenagers in droves are going to see it.
The Purge: Anarchy, the sequel to summer 2013’s sleeper hit that opened to No. 1 at the box-office, sees the return of writer/director/producer James DeMonaco to craft the next terrifying chapter of dutiful citizens preparing for their country’s yearly 12 hours of anarchy.
This is one of those films that shows the darker side of Hollywood and all that is wrong with “entertainment.” From beginning to end, it is one senseless killing after another.
Speaking of senseless, the story, although interesting to think about, has way too many holes for me to think about it for very long. I mean seriously, who goes grocery shopping two hours before every crime imaginable is legal. I would be locking myself in my home for weeks leading up to this insane event.
At The Source, we know that unfortunately many of your teenagers are going to want to go see this film. And as you might expect, it is graphic and gratuitous for the entire hour and forty-four minutes.
No surprise I did not care for the film and scored it as low as a “Skip It.”
SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
No. The violence is extremely graphic and disturbing. There are also over 40 uses of the F-word and plenty of other obscenities.
CONVERSATION STARTER:
- Why does the government believe the purge is so effective?
- Can you imagine even if your school adopted a no-rules for the day policy? What do you think would happen?
- According to this passage, why should we “follow the rules”?
- What can you do this week to show those in authority that you respect them?
Read Romans 13:1-2
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
