Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (6/29/2010)

Rated PG for action violence and peril, some scary images and suggestive material, and mild language.

Directed by Chris Columbus (Adventures in Babysitting, Home Alone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)

Starring Logan Lerman, Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman and Kevin McKidd

A great action-adventure movie for the whole family!

Modern and mythical worlds collide in this thunderous fantasy-adventure. Percy Jackson is no ordinary teenager… he’s just learned he’s the son of Poseidon and is accused of stealing Zeus’ ¬lightning bolt – the most powerful weapon ever created! With storm clouds brewing, Percy embarks on an incredible cross-country journey to prove his innocence, recover the bolt and prevent a war amongst the gods that could destroy our world!

I love a good action-adventure movie…but I really love when I can enjoy one with my family. Movies like National Treasure and Race to Witch Mountain are fun, exciting and clean…now I can add Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief to that list.

My son and I started reading this book several months ago. The plan was for us to read it together, but he couldn’t put it down. In fact a day or two past without us reading and when I asked him to grab the book, he gave that “I just did something wrong smile”, and told me he finished it. I completely understand that, the story is very entertaining and engaging. And the film makers were able to capture that magic and transfer it to the screen.

Logan Lerman does a fantastic job bringing the Percy Jackson character to life, and the cast of gods and mythical creatures are terrific. The action is intense at times – the minotaur, the hydra, Hades and some of the fight scenes look great although they may be a little too intense for younger viewers.

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
Yes, especially if they have read the books. As I mentioned above some of the action may be a little too intense for younger viewers. There only other concern I had were some of the outfits worn by the Aphrodite Girls and other characters.
