P.S. I Love You (5/06/2008)

Rated PG-13 for sexual references and brief nudity.

Directed by Richard LaGravenes (Freedom Writers)

Starring Hilary Swank, Lisa Kudrow, Kathy Bates, Harry Connick Jr., Gerald Butler…

P.S. I Love You was a tearjerker, but it was probably one of my favorite “date flicks” of the year.

The story is about a young widow (Swank) who discovers that her late husband has left her 10 messages intended to help ease her pain and start a new life.

Yes, you’ll need to break out the tissue box for this one. But don’t dismiss it as a “downer.” The film balances the heart with plenty of humor.

The thing I like most about this film is that the script was fresh and creative. It’s nice to see something new and something that feels authentic. The dialogue was real and the characters were intriguing. I especially liked the character played by Harry Connick, a man with a “syndrome” that hinders him from having any social boundaries (I’ve met people like that… haven’t you?)

I love this little piece of dialogue:

Daniel Connelly: What do women want?

Holly Kennedy: [whispering] We have no idea what we want.

    Daniel Connelly: I knew it!

The performances were incredible. I love the range that Hilary Swank has proven over the years. She comes through in this film once again. Gerald Butler (forever a Spartan in my mind) was phenomenal. And who can ever complain about the range of Harry Connick? He can play the compassionate boyfriend (Hope Floats), the abusive ex (Bug), the zany friend (Independence Day), or the freaky deranged killer (CopyCat).

Guys- pop some popcorn, put the kids to bed and watch this one with your wife!

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
Not young kids. I would probably let my H.S. kids watch it with me, but we’d be pausing the film at one point and talking about the implied sex scene. (I always take advantages of times in TV or movies where pre-marital sex is implied. I ask my kids, “What just happened there? What does the Bible say about this?” These are real world occurrences that our kids will encounter.) The brief nudity is a guys butt as he gets out of the shower.

Three Simple Questions (with Answers You May Be Looking for):

  1. What are some of the messages or themes you observed in this movie?
  2. How do you suppose we—as serious Christ-followers—should react to this movie?
  3. How can we move from healthy, Bible-based opinions about this movie to actually living out those opinions?
