Omen, The (10/17/06)

Rated R for disturbing violent content, graphic images and some language.

Directed by John Moore

Starring Live Schreiber, Julia Stiles…

It’s not a rare occurrence for a film to emerge that is filled with “apocalyptic” elements or predictions. In the last few years we’ve seen several movies about exorcisms, a few about angels and demons, and even a few portraying the devil himself (Constantine).

Our spiritually hungry society keeps returning to these films, usually seeing something other than a biblical interpretation of spiritual warfare, God and the devil.

So it wasn’t surprising that on 6/6/06 Hollywood released a remake of The Omen, a film about the coming of the antichrist, a little boy who is the devil incarnate. But unfortunately that’s all it is… it’s just a remake.

If the 1976 version of the film never existed, I probably would have enjoyed this film a lot better. But there is an original… and that just took away some of the flair.

The 2006 version is actually a very scary horror film. But I had the same feeling as when I watched the remake of Psycho. I just wondered, “Why?”

Don’t get me wrong. The film is very well written, and the performances were excellent. If you’re a horror fan and you haven’t seen the first, then you might rank this among the better of the genre.

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
No way. It’s way too scary and violent.

Side Note:
As said above, we don’t recommend your kids see this film. But on the occasion that they actually have already seen it, you may want to dialogue about the film with them. These questions below may be a help to you.
