Nanny Diaries, The (12/4/2007)

Rated PG-13 for language.

Directed by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman

Starring Scarlett Johansson, Laura Linney, Paul Giamatti…

This was probably one of my favorite “date night” films of 2007.

A college graduate (Johansson) in search of a career settles for a job as a nanny working for a New York mom that rivals the snobbiness of Streep’s character in A Devil Wears Prada. Once she grows close to the young boy in her charge, she finds herself entangled in drama so deep that she fears she will never escape.

The script was refreshingly new and creative, based on the best selling novel of the same name. The story balanced humor and heart, the perfect blend for a tasty romantic comedy. And Johansson melded to the role so well that it seemed that it was written for her.

My wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed the film and will probably find it on our DVD shelf right next to While You Were Sleeping, The Notebook and Hitch.

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
Most younger kids would be bored with the story, but it’s fairly clean. It’s rated PG-13 only for language. No sex or nudity at all, only a scene where two adults disappear into an apartment kissing. I’d let teens and some tweens see it, but I’d spare the younger audiences.
