Chances are you never heard of The Mighty Macs, and if that’s true, you need to check it out; especially if you have a daughter involved in sports.
The Mighty Macs is based on the incredible true story of the 1971-72 Immaculata College team that started in obscurity but became the original Cinderella story in women’s basketball. This team of trailblazers went from barely making that inaugural tournament to the first dynasty in their game. And Cathy Rush, the woman that was ahead of her time, became immortalized when she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
I’ll admit I was pretty skeptical going into this one. I mean, the name doesn’t exactly scream blockbuster, but don’t let that stop you from watching it. This movie is pure enjoyment. The story about the underdog team is uplifting and inspirational…exactly what you want in real life sports movie. Not to mention it is rated G.
Although the movie has some sports clichés, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, even mocking its own dialogue with: “That’s the corniest thing I’ve ever heard.” Plus there are so many things to like about this movie. First, the story is a based on actual events and honestly I’m a sucker for a good sports movie that is a true story.
Second, the girls look like real girls, not supermodels. This is HUGE! There are plenty of movies where not a single actor looks like a “real person” and this was like a breath of fresh air.
Third, Carla Gugino. She delivers a great performance and gives Rush that dignified determination. When telling a true story, you really need someone who is likeable and believable. Carla Gugino nails it.
And fourth, and most important, this is a sports movie about a women’s team. And let’s be honest, those are few and far between. My wife played basketball in high school and a little in college and, as a youth pastor, I’ve been attending girls sporting events for over 15 years. The facts are almost always the same: the stands are rarely full and the gyms are a lot quieter. So it was nice to see a female sports story get some recognition.
Take your family and friends to this one, it’s “Theater Worthy.”
SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
Yes, this is a great movie for everyone.
Conversation Starter:
- Have you ever been an “underdog”? Tell me what happened.
- How did it feel when no one believed in you?
- How did it feel when you won or succeeded?
- In the movie we see that God can use seemingly insignificant things to answer the prayers of His faithful followers. Talk about a time when God used you in a large or small way.
- How does that verse encourage you?
- How do you think God wants to use you this week?
Read 1 Corinthians 1:27
Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. (NLT)
