Rated PG-13 for action violence, some suggestive content, and partial nudity.
Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander and Hugh Grant
Directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, Snatch and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels)
The “coolest” film of 2015.
Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. centers on CIA agent Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Kuryakin (Armie Hammer). Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.
I have never seen an episode of the 60’s television show “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” in fact I never even heard of it…but this movie is so good that I’m now on a quest to find it.
First of all, if Christopher Nolan is the smartest director in Hollywood than Guy Ritchie is the coolest. Every shot, every song, every look is cooler than the one before.
I am a fan of Henry Cavill and it was great to see him nail yet another role. He was great in the Immortals, I liked him in The Cold Light of Day, and loved him in his most recent and most iconic role of Superman. In The Man from U.N.C.L.E. He plays the confident American spy perfectly! And it was also great to see Armie Hammer rebound after a very disappointing showing in The Lone Ranger. The rest of the cast including a smaller part by Huge Grant only make things better.
The story is well crafted and fun. It’s not too complex, allowing the audience to predict several of the twist and turns, but no one seems to mind because it is such an entertaining ride.
The sets, designs and costumes are also all very cool. Like most Guy Ritchie films, the attention to detail is extremely high.
Everyone is saying that The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is giving Jame Bond a run for his money, and I completely agree. This movie is “Worth Buying.”
SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
There is no sex or nudity shown, but there is a scene where a woman is walking away from the camera, wearing only a pair of panties. Her entire backside is visible. There is also a lot of implied sex.
This is an action movie, and there is a lot of action throughout. The action is not graphic or gory. There is a small amount of language including a few uses of the ‘d’ word and ‘a’ word.
CONVERSATION STARTER:
- How would you describe the differences between Solo and Kuryakin?
- How would you describe the differences between you and your friends?
- What does this passage teach us about our differences?
- What can you do this week to appreciate your differences as a gift from God?
Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-27
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
