Knight and Day (11/30/2010)

Rated PG-13 for sequences of action violence throughout, and brief strong language.

Starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz

Directed by James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line, Identity and Kate & Leopold)

This movie has enough action, comedy and romance to make it a decent date night movie.

In the action-comedy KNIGHT AND DAY, Tom Cruise is a covert agent and Cameron Diaz is a woman caught between him and those he claims set him up. As their globetrotting adventure erupts into a maze of double-crosses, close escapes, false identities, and head-spinning romantic snafus, they come to realize that all they can count on is each other.

I am a fan of Tom Cruise…I am not a fan of Cameron Diaz. When I saw the trailer, my first thought was, “Shoot – that looks great…too bad Cameron Diaz is in it.” So when my wife came home with Knight and Day for our date night…I was less than excited. But I love my wife so I made some popcorn and fired up the Blu-Ray player…expecting the worse. As the credits rolled I realized, it wasn’t the best movie I have seen this year, but it certainly wasn’t as bad as I expected.

Let me start with the cast. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz were OK. Yeah, just OK. It’s as if they balanced (or cancelled – depending on how you want to look at it) each other out. Cruise’s performance was good – but not superstar good. And Diaz wasn’t even close to being as annoying as she usually is. Put them together and they were pretty good.

The story is a total check-your-brain-at-the-door story. Seriously if you have any hope of enjoying this film, just sit back and enjoy the ride. Because the ride is pretty fun…in fact it is the most entertaining part of the movie. I’m glad the action was non-stop because what little story there was kinda fell apart in the middle. It was as if the film makers couldn’t decide if they wanted a comedy or serious spy movie. Which was the biggest disappointment for me because I really like director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line). But nobody hits a homerun every time. I’m giving Knight and Day a Rental.

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
This PG-13 rated movie has plenty of action and violence. There is no nudity or sex but there is some brief strong language.
