Hannah Montana: The Movie (8/18/2009)

Rated G

Directed by Peter Chelsom (Shall We Dance, Serendipity)

Starring Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus

Hannah Montana: The Movie isn't exactly what we would call “high art,” but that's not stopping millions of tweens and teens from flocking to see the new Miley Cyrus movie.

As the story begins, Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) is torn between her two worlds. On the one hand, she struggles with the demands of being a normal teenager as Miley and on the other, she juggles the demands of fame as Hannah Montana, the pop superstar and teen sensation. The constant tours, photo ops and her soaring popularity threaten to take over her life. With a little urging from her father, the teenager travels back to her hometown of Crowley Corners, Tennessee, to rediscover what's really important.

Yes, I gave it a “rental.” No, I haven’t lost my mind.

I'm a dad, I have two kids and let me tell you they have been counting down the days “until the Hannah Montana movie comes out on DVD.” They got a funny, clean movie that they LOVED. I got pretty much exactly what I was expecting… a well polished Disney film that the filmmakers knew they didn’t even have to try in order to impress their HUGE audience.

There were plenty of great family moments and some slapstick comedy (that made my kids laugh a lot harder than I did) – all of which made it tolerable. I’m not a fan but it is hard to deny the talent of Miley Cyrus.

In the end, fans of the series will love it. Their parents? Well, we just endure it as a “Rental.”
