Greatest Game Ever Played, The (4/11/2006)

Rated PG for some brief mild language

Directed by Bill Paxton (Frailty)

Starring Shia LaBeouf

Good family friendly entertainment, but not “the greatest film ever made.”

I’m not knocking The Greatest Game Ever Played, I think it’s a great rental.

The story is a golf drama based on the true story of the 1913 US Open, where 20-year-old Francis Ouimet played reigning champion Harry Vardon. And if you haven’t read the tag lines for the movie… DON’T. Because then you’ll know who wins!

Golf fans will enjoy the film in the same way they enjoyed The Legend of Bagger Vance. You’ll see the proverbial “camera following the ball” shot, and you’ll see the golfers “clear the mechanism” just like Billy Chapel in For the Love of the Game.

Paxton’s directing was good. His camera shots were fun and allowed you some unique perspectives.

Fresh? Not really.

Entertaining? Sure. Especially Francis’s little caddie, Eddie. He stole the movie.

A good family film for sure. Just have coloring books for the young kids, it’s a little slow at times.

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT:
Sure—nothing objectionable in it other than some brief mild language.
