Fright Night (12/13/2011)

Rated R for bloody horror violence, and language including some sexual references.

Starring Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Toni Collette

Directed by Craig Gillespie (Mr. Woodcock)

Typical Hollywood remake trash.

Senior Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger, Jerry (Colin Farrell), moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right— yet no one, including Charley’s mom (Toni Collette), seems to notice! After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charley comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charley has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself.

The 1983 film is a cult classic. It’s campy, cheesy and a lot of people love it. This movie is close to the original in story…but is very different in the gore and language category. This movie was tough to sit through – especially when I knew it was made and marketed for teenagers…WITH AN R RATING!!! UGH!!

So here’s what you need to know…Lots of four-letter words, lots of blood and lots of skin…do I need to say anymore?

It’s a Coaster for sure.

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
That’s easy…No.

Three Simple Questions (with Answers You May Be Looking for):

Q: What’s the message/theme of this movie?
A: At its core, this movie is about protecting the ones you love. Charlie loves his mom and his girlfriend, and he’s willing to risk his life to take on a vampire.

Q: How do you suppose we—as serious Christ-followers—should react to this movie?
A: As honorable as it is to protect the ones we love, let’s look what the Bible says about God protecting us. Have your child/student read Psalm 46.

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!
What kind of “troubles” are you facing right now?

How do you feel knowing God is our “refuge and strength” no matter what we are facing?

A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it. The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God’s voice thunders, and the earth melts! The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.

Q: How can we move from healthy, Bible-based opinions about this movie to actually living out those opinions?
A: Finish reading Psalm 46
Come, see the glorious works of the Lord: See how he brings destruction upon the world. He causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear; he burns the shields with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.
What do you think “Be still, and know that I am God!” means?

How does that verse help you face your current difficulty?

How can you BE STILL and TRUST Him?
