Rated PG-13 for action violence, some sexual material, brief nudity and language.
Directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch, Sweet Home Alabama and Fools Rush In)
Starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson and Donald Sutherland
Fool’s Gold is way more entertaining than I expected.
Benjamin Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is a deep-sea treasure hunter who this time is certain he's discovered the find of the century in waters near an island close to Key West. Unfortunately for him, he has just sunk the boat of fellow treasure hunter and notorious rap star, Bigg Bunny. On top of that, Ben is recently divorced from Tess (Kate Hudson), his long-time research and diving partner whom he still loves. Although she is trying to get back to Chicago, she finds herself working as a steward aboard the yacht of multimillionaire, Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland). The rapper has hired a rival treasurer hunter, so Ben must convince Tess to help and Nigel to bankroll his search. A fun-filled race to the treasure is on.
Let me be real clear, this movie is completely popcorn entertainment. In my opinion, Matthew McConaughey can only play this role. And you know the role I am talking about, this is the same character from films like Dazed and Confused and Failure to Launch, but, to his credit, he does a great job and even made me laugh more than a few times. Kate Hudson is also great as Tess and together they are simply perfect. Like her reaction when she first sees Ben on the yacht or when she hits him with the cane. And trust me that’s just the beginning.
There were some other very funny moments and it just seemed that the entire cast was made for this film. The scenery and action shots were just beautiful and made me wish I was there. The pace and story kept me interested and I was almost disappointed when it was over.
If you haven’t rented it yet…pick it up and enjoy a dumb but very entertaining movie.
SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
Although no details are talked about, Tess often references how great “the sex was” and you do see more than enough of Matthew McConaughey. While in a church basement they get intimate and while nothing is shown a lot is implied. Most of the violence is “fun” but there is a shooting scene that surprised me.
