Something You Can Use For the New Year: Choices and Your Future

by Jonathan McKee
December 16, 2003

Since this is the last EZINE of 2003, we wanted to give you something you can use for the beginning of 2004.

The Future
(from Jonathan’s book, “The Top 12 Resources Youth Workers Want” from Gospel Light)

The New Year is always a time of self reflection about the past … and the future. During this time of New Year’s resolutions, planning and commitment, here’s a discussion to help students think about how their choices influence their future.

Introduction:
I want to introduce to you someone who has an incredible impact on your life. This person has the power to decide whether you are going to be a success, or a failure. That person is you! You have the power of choice. You are standing at the crossroads – which direction you go is up to you.

Discussion Starters:
Hand out the Goal Sheet- where I want to be in the future- 5, 10, 15, and twenty years from now.

Small Group Discussion:
  1. Some of you share where you are going to be at, your job, etc. in 5 years, in 10 years, in 20 years.
  2. What was the hardest item for you to predict?
  3. Do some of these predictions make you think about your decisions today?
Generic questions about the future:
  1. Do you feel the future is getting better or worse? Why?
  2. Do you think your future will be better than your parents? Why?
  3. What factors/ingredients influence your future the most?
  4. Who has the greatest influence on your future?
  5. What is your responsibility for your future?
  6. How do your decisions impact your future?
  7. What have you done this school year (good, bad, major, minor), that affects who you are today?
  8. Can your decisions impact someone else’s future? How?
Wrap up:
“Listening to you guys talk, you have said- different people affect your future. I also heard you say that YOU and the decisions you make are going to have a huge impact on your future. A long time ago God made a huge choice that has an incredible impact on your future.”

Share the Gospel story.

“Many of you need to make a decision today which will impact your future for eternity.”
