Featured: Heap Winners!

The Source for Youth Ministry put on a contest for all youth workers, volunteer or paid, to reward them for driving a hideous heap!

Youth Specialties sponsored this contest with some great prizes, including Free Registration to Youth Specialties National Youth Workers Convention – a $350 value (Click Here)

All entries were due on April 15, 2005. The staff at YOUTH SPECIALTIES picked the winners. Take a look at the winners followed by some of this years entries …

1st Place Winner

Melissa Hughes, Youth Pastor, Longview, Washington
“Blue Boy” was a repo; previous owner was wanted on warrant. Trunk leaks, radio falls out going uphill, glove box doesn’t close, broken door handle, back windows don’t work, back axle is unfixable, front-end squeaks and he has over 270,000 miles. The kids thought he was cool until I got the muffler fixed!

1st Place Prize:
Free Registration to Youth Specialties National Youth Workers Convention (city of your choice, Registration only) – $350 value (Click Here)

2nd Place Winner

Logan Johnson, volunteer full time youth pastor and community youth worker, Motueka, New Zealand
Ever since I bought my car the paint and other key parts have been falling off left, right, and center. It looks like an absolute heap, but the young people still seem to like it.

2nd Place Prizes:
Ideas Library CD – $129.99 (Click Here)

3rd Place Winner

Zoe Fay, Youth Worker, Salvation Army,Toronto
I have been a youth worker in Toronto for 3 years using this vehicle. Our beloved “Beater”, bought for $100 and officially in use until it dies … our exceedingly noisy, slow, fuel guzzling, smelly, brightly painted, best friend is an amazing ministry tool.

3rd Place Prizes:
Creative Bible Lessons on CD-ROM – $69.99 (Click Here)

4th Place Winner

Dean Sternik, Youth Pastor, West Olive, MI.
This car was given to us just over a year ago. It shakes until you hit about 25 mph, squeals like crazy on its own unpredictable time, the trunk leaks and the back lights keep blowing because they take on water. Left headlight is filled part way with water that won’t come out.

4th Place Prizes:
High School Talk Sheet Three Pack $44.97 (Click Here)

Honorable Mention

Jacob Meddles, Volunteer Small Group Leader, Beavercreek Christian Church, Beavercreek, OH
My car is a heap because it has a big hole in the door along with multiple other holes. The driver side window doesn’t roll up correctly and the air conditioner doesn’t work. It doesn’t like to run in the rain.

Brett ‘monger’ Pederson, Part-time youth director, Cornerstone Community Church, Red Wing, MN
A 1982 rx-7 is my daily driver and the worst winter vehicle ever made. When I see parts fall off the car I don’t stop and pick them up anymore. I was hit by an uninsured driver and didn’t get any compensation. It started on fire last year and almost burnt to a crisp. It never stops rattling, ever.

Graig Erenstoft, full time director of youth ministries, First United Methodist Church, Saint Cloud, Florida
The wonderful piece of machinery that you are looking at is my 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis. It’s old but it gets me from one place to the other…can I just say my Senior pastor put me up to this…

Honorable Mention Prizes: Jonathan McKee’s new book on reaching “the Unchurched” … DO THEY RUN WHEN THEY SEE YOU COMING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO ABOUT THIS PRIZE

What’s New: Jonathan’s Opinion of Those “Fockers”
“Meet the Fockers” Hits Video Today … and PG-13 Hits the Fan!

Meet the Fockers (hitting video shelves 4/19/2005)
Rated PG-13
Starring Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand

I heard of a pastor in our town who was publicly condemning this film because of the title. Trust me … the title is the least of this film’s leap beyond “the line.”

Amusing? Yes. Creative? Yes. Good performances? Sure … look who’s in it.

Across the line? By a mile.

I guess my biggest surprise in the film is that it was PG-13. The film was just straight up nasty! And I’m no fundamentalist! Eminem would cover his kid’s eyes! Janet Jackson would say it was inappropriate! …
