Dynamic ImageChasing Mavericks is a must see family friendly movie.

Based on the inspirational true story of surfing icon Jay Moriarty, Chasing Mavericks tells the story of a young man’s quest to surf Northern California’s most dangerous wave, and the local legend who takes him under his wing. What begins as a mentorship turns into a unique lifelong bond, as the two unlikely friends discover that there is nothing more powerful than pushing your limits and chasing a nearly impossible dream.

With the Narnia films and the Journey 2 on their resume, I had pretty high expectation from the latest Walden Media film. And they delivered another quality live-action movie for the entire family.

There are so many things to like about Chasing Mavericks, so let’s talk about some of them. I think we have to start with this amazing true story. I didn’t know anything about Jay or his story…and I believe that was a significant reason I enjoyed it as much as I did.

I love true stories – especially true stories about underdogs. And Jay Moriarty is an underdog in every sense of the word. From his dysfunctional home life to being bullied by peers, Jay experiences rejection at every turn. That’s why his determination is so inspiring.

There is only a brief clip during the credits of the real Jay, so it’s difficult to say if Jonny Westin was the “perfect match.” But what’s not difficult to say is that they, Gerard Butler and Elisabeth Shue, are all fantastic. None of these characters are “easy” to play. They are all broken and flawed and the actors played them perfectly.

Finally the directors do a superb job of balancing the story and the pace while tugging at your heartstrings. I was also pleasantly surprised that they stayed away from the cheesy cliché training montage. Instead they used the one “character” that we haven’t talked about yet…the ocean. The filmmakers managed to capture some amazing scenes showing us the beauty and power of the ocean waves. On more than one occasion I caught myself saying out loud, “oh my gosh.” It’s simply breathtaking.

My guess is you are not familiar with Jay, his story or even this movie. I would highly recommend you sit down with your family and watch this one. It’s “Worth Buying.”

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
Yes. I can easily recommend this fantastic movie for kids 10 and up.
