Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (3/30/2010)

Rated PG for some mild rude humor.

Directed by Betty Thomas (John Tucker Must Die and 28 Days)

Starring Zachary Levi, David Cross and Jason Lee

When Jonathan reviewed Alvin and the Chipmunks back in 2008 he said, “I enjoy it when I see my kids enjoy a movie. And that’s about all the enjoyment you’ll get out of Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I have to agree with Jonathan. And The Squeakquel is just more of the same. (As you can see from the pic, I had more fun in the lobby than in the theatre.)

Pop sensations Alvin, Simon and Theodore end up in the care of Dave Seville's twenty-something nephew Toby (Levi). The boys must put aside music superstardom to return to school, and are tasked with saving the school's music program by winning the $25,000 prize in a battle of the bands. But The Chipmunks unexpectedly meet their match in three singing chipmunks known as The Chipettes -– Brittany, Eleanor and Jeanette. Romantic and musical sparks are ignited when The Chipmunks and Chipettes square off.

I’ve been to the theater three different times since this movie was released and every time The Squeakquel has been sold out and the lines to get tickets have been ridiculous. Not to mention the GIANT statues in the lobby where kids are all clamoring to get their picture taken with The Chipmunks…yeah I couldn’t resist either.

As expected, the story (I guess you would call it a story) is as ridiculous and annoying as the chipmunks voices. While Jason Lee is in the movie, he is mostly replaced by his nephew (Chuck’s Zachary Levi). Bad move…Jason Lee was one of the only bright spots of the original.

As we walked out of the theater I asked my kids what they thought. They just looked at each other and said it wasn’t as good as the first one…I agree. So I’m giving it the “Skip It.”

SHOULD KIDS SEE IT?
There’s nothing offensive so yes they can…but should they? Well that’s another question all together.
