This morning I received a phone call from a friend … the kind of call I wish I never had to take. Co-founder and owner of Youth Specialties (YS), Mike Yaconelli, was in a fatal car accident in northern California late last evening. Mike has touched the lives of many of us through his ministry, through his speaking, and through his writings. He will be missed.
Words are hard to come by during these times. So I’ll leave you with a psalm written by one of Mike’s mentors and close friend, the late Joe Bayly. I am sure they are renewing their friendship in heaven right now. Mike published this poem in The Wittenberg Door in 1973
A PSALM ABOUT THE SHORTNESS OF LIFE
I said
Oh Lord
Let me end the work
You gave to me to do.
So much
must yet be done
before the dark
so little time
remains
before I’m home.
You are eternal
God
a thousand years to
You
is but a passing day.
You scatter a ages
I hoard my hours.
Please understand my
need for time
to do Your will
complete my job.
I understand

I do
I only had three years
of days
and I was through

Mike, a child of our Father, has gone home. We’ll miss him, but his legacy and his impact will live on.
Please keep his wife, Karla, his father, Ernie, his children and grandchildren, and the YS staff in your prayers, as they deal with this painful loss.
