| Something New: Sample Youth Ministry Job Description |
Ever wonder what youth ministers do every day? Ever wonder what they should be doing?
I receive frequent emails from pastors, search committees and even youth pastors, looking for sample youth ministry job descriptions. Some are looking for a new youth worker… others just are looking for direction for their youth ministry.
Our “LOGISTICAL CRUD” page (see article below this one) has a ton of new resources to help churches with these needs. Here’s just one of those resources: a Sample Youth Ministry Job Description. We understand that this isn’t “THE ONLY” job description-this is just a sample of one that many churches could use.
Job Description
Job Title: Director of Student Ministries
Reports to: Senior Pastor
Measurable Criteria:
- Agreement with our church’s vision, goals and statement of faith
- At least a Bachelor’s degree (B. A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university (some Bible college or Seminary desired)
- At least three years youth ministry experience in a growing youth ministry
- Experience managing others
- A strong walk with God through a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ
- Teachable, with a desire to grow in their faith and abilities
- A self starter-highly motivated
- Has a passion for youth ministry
- Understands youth culture today
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- A good role model
- Team player with effective relational skills (works well with others)
- Set the vision for the youth ministry with a plan to carry it out
- Create a Biblical purpose statement for the youth group including at least these three elements: evangelism, spiritual growth (which includes fellowship, worship and Biblical teaching), and student leadership
- Teach the vision and purpose statement to all volunteers, staff, and student leaders
- Develop and lead programs according to the vision and purpose of the youth ministry
- Create outreach programs, activities and events (evangelism)
- Plan spiritual growth programs, activities and events that include opportunities for kids to worship, fellowship with each other, learn Biblical truths and apply them to their lives (spiritual growth)
- Plan programs, activities or events, developing students who want to reach out and serve others, impacting them with the love of Christ (student leadership)
- Recruit and train volunteer leaders to help you with your purpose
- Every student should know an adult who is praying, caring and investing in their lives
- Meet regularly with your volunteers and staff
- Build into your team with consistent training and equipping
- Provide annual training events or conferences for your team
- Build and maintain relationships with kids both churched and unchurched
- Meet regularly with kids from the youth group
- Befriend several unchurched kids with no strings attached
- Seek out opportunities to “hang out” with kids on campus, at sports events, or in the community
- Build and maintain quality relationships with parents
- Clearly share your vision with parents so they understand the purpose of the youth ministry
- Create avenues of consistent contact with parents (regular e-newsletters, annual parent meetings, etc.)
- Become aware of the needs of the parents
- Network with other youth workers in the community
- Initiate contact with other youth workers to pray for the community
- Meet regularly with other youth workers, encouraging each other, sharing ideas and experiences
- Program or attend area events with other youth ministries annually
- Set and oversee the youth ministry budget
- Set a budget that reflects the values in your vision and purpose
- Be prudent with finances, sticking with the budget you set
- Involve students in the ministry of the church as a whole, supporting and participating in the church’s vision, worship services, and activities
- Attend weekly church staff meeting
- Provide a weekly report to the senior pastor of your goals, accomplishments, prayers and praises

Some new films have come to DVD in the last month. And one of them is pretty scary. No… not a horror film… but scary in terms of how low PG-13 is willing to go. Adam Sandler’s CLICK has leapt new bounds in PG-13 vulgarity. Definitely don’t let the teenagers see this one at the next movie night!
Take a look at Jonathan’s 2 cents on a couple new movies that you’ll want to see… and a couple that you’ll want to definitely skip.
ClickON DVD TODAY- 10/10/2006
Rated PG-13 for language, crude and sex-related humor, and some drug references.
Directed by Frank Coraci (The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer)
Starring Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, Christopher Walken, David Haselhoff…
JONATHAN’S SCORE: Skip It
Let me be clear. Don’t let your teenagers see this film.
This film could have been so much-a creative “A Christmas Carol” of sorts. Unfortunately, the film sold out to typical Sandler-of-late crassness. So creativity took back seat to vulgarity.
Was it funny? I guess. There are some funny gags… you saw the really funny ones in the previews.
Good overall message? Sure… just like Wedding Crashers (cynicism implied). There might be a lesson underneath all the filth (and the ending of the film was actually pretty well written).
But…
WOW! PG-13 progressively amazes me. Let me be crystal clear: Do NOT let the kids see this film. Actually… don’t let the adults see this film.
X Men: The Last StandON DVD LAST WEEK- 10/3/2006
Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action violence, some sexual content and language.
Directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Rush Hour 2, The Family Man, Red Dragon…)
Starring Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, Anna Paquin, Vinnie Jones…
JONATHAN’S SCORE: Rental
This film was probably as good as the others.
It lacked the humor of the original, but had enough good action scenes to make up for it. X Men fans will like some of the back story that this film delivers as well.
The third film in the series starts with a flashback of when Professor Charles Xavier (Stewart) and Magneto (McKellen) worked side by side. But in present time, when a cure is found to treat mutations, lines are drawn amongst the X-Men. Xavier continues to stand for good, where the Brotherhood, a band of powerful mutants organized by Magneto (McKellen) rise up against authority.
The Lake HouseON DVD TWO WEEKS AGO- 9/26/2006
Rated PG for some language and a disturbing image.
Directed by Alejandro Agresti
Starring Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, Christopher Plummer
JONATHAN’S SCORE: Skip It
Creative idea, but a little too slow for my taste.
A lonely doctor (Bullock) who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its newest resident, a frustrated architect (Reeves). They must try to unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance before it’s too late.
This chick flick definitely had an original premise. The story had me intrigued and wondering how the tale would end, but it just didn’t have enough to hold me throughout the film. If it was a book, I would have just skipped to the last chapter. As it turned out, I think I saw my watch more than I did the big screen.
