HIGH IMPACT SPEAKING, PART II: Not Just Speaking to Entertain, but to Make an Impact |
August 6, 2002
In our last newsletter we gave you the first step of how to develop a better talk.
IF YOU MISSED PART I OF HIGH IMPACT SPEAKING, USE THIS LINK TO CATCH UP TO SPEED:
For those who are caught up, lets go on to the second step.
3 STEPS TO DEVELOPING A BETTER TALK
Step 2. State Your Point
Once we?ve decided what the point of our talk is, we want to figure out the best way to say it. Some of us might ask, “Why not just say it?” Sure . . . we could just say, “You should not lose control of your anger!” But let?s give ourselves a little more creativity credit than that.
It is important to state your point in a “sound-bite” or phrase that is catchy. We want to take our point and make it a small, easy to remember sound-bite that students will remember when they walk away.
Think of famous sound-bites in history. “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.” From Abraham Lincoln to Winston Churchill, great speakers master the sound-bite. Want a modern day example? Okay . . . how about Johnny Cochran when he said, “If the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit!”
How could we change our anger point into a sound-bite? How about, “Don?t Choose to Lose!”
As we go through this process of 1.) Selecting our Point and 2.) Stating our Point, we slowly mold our talk into a focused message that students hear loud and clear. The only thing left to do is Step 3 . . .
Step 3. Support Your Point
Supporting our point is simply answering the HOW or the WHY, and giving examples. It would do no good to just walk up to someone and say, “Don?t Choose to Lose!” and walk away. But in a carefully crafted message about anger you can give a talk with the sound-bite “Don?t Choose to Lose.” This thesis or this main point would prompt the audience to ask themselves, “Why shouldn?t I lose my temper? In the movies everyone loses their temper- it looks like the thing to do! Why shouldn?t I?” We need to answer this “WHY” with our support or rationale. (I gave you some examples of “WHY” in Step 1.)
For an example of supporting our point, let?s look at the I Peter example again from Step 1. I told you that the main point I like to take out of this passage is, “You SHOULD watch out for evil desires!” I like to state this as “Watch what you let creep in your life!” This sound-bite raises the question “WHY?” Now remember- since we are preaching out of a passage here- you can?t give any ol? reason that sounds good- you have to give the reasons in the passage. I give two reasons from the scripture: 1. This is all temporary (vs. 11) and 2. We?re being watched (vs. 12).
Once we answer the HOW or WHY, we need to provide stories, illustrations or examples to reinforce our point and our rationale. Don?t underestimate the power of a story. Sometimes, regardless of how hard we try, students won?t remember a single point we say, but they?ll remember our stories. Beware of a talk that is just principle after principle. Fill your talks with stories and examples to support your points.
At the end of my talk on the I Peter passage, I use a personal story to emphasize and support the second rationale, “We?re being watched!” I emphasize how our testimony or our actions speak loudly to the non-believers around us. I illustrate this with a story of when I was in high school in Biology and I stood up for Creationism, arguing against evolution. Then the following week, in the very same class, I got caught cheating on a test. I end this story by asking the audience, “Do you think that class remembers anything I said for or about Creationism? No . . . they don?t. But they remember me cheating. Be careful, you?re being watched.”
REVIEW:
1. Select your point.
What is the one point you want to talk about?
What is this passage saying?
Do you want to give a “you should” talk or a “you can” talk?
2. State your point.
What is your sound-bite?
3. Support your point.
What is the answer to the HOW or WHY?
What stories, illustrations and examples can you give for each rationale?

JAY LAFFOON SPEAKING TIPS. Jay Laffoon, Dynamic Communicator Workshop Instructor, gives us FREE tips we can use in our ministry this Fall! |
August 6, 2002
Not only is Jay a great speaker and trainer . . . he?s a great guy. Jay wants to see you succeed in your ministry. Here?s the basics from Jay, exclusively to all of our EZINE subscribers.
SPEAKING WITH FOCUS, CLARITY AND POWER
Every time we open our mouths in front of a group of young people, we either build up or tear down the Kingdom of God.
Unfortunately there is no neutral ground.
Therefore, every time we speak to our kids we need to understand the tremendous responsibility we have. You can be a dynamic instrument for the Kingdom of God by learning to speak with Focus, Clarity and Power.
FOCUS
Have you ever seen one of those pocket laser pointers? You know the kind your kids take to camps and conferences in order to annoy people across the room? On the back of those pointers, you will read “danger, avoid direct eye exposure.” These little lights are powered by two little watch batteries and yet they have the ability to blind a person?why? Because the light is FOCUSED!
When we speak we will have the greatest impact when we stay focused. Dynamic Communications International conducted a survey, and asked people leaving a speech if they could tell us what the speaker’s main point was? 75% could not. One for four might get you a million dollar contract in Baseball, but its not good odds when we speak. In that same survey, only 50% of the speakers could tell us in a single sentence the main point of their talk.
Focus is essential to clear communication. We Americans have a problem known as the “Cognitive Dump!!” We figure the more information we can dump on people the better. Just the opposite is true. Try to get one solid point across each week, one nugget of truth, and by the end of the year your kids will have a gold mine of spiritual truth.
CLARITY
We should all learn from the best. Jesus was a master story teller. He taught with parables (stories). The best way to make your nugget of truth clear is with pictures. Whether they are pictures that you paint with your words, or a visual illustration that you bring with you, pictures help us learn.
A study was conducted that indicates people remember over 90% of what they see. Don’t believe me? Picture in your mind the image of the world trade center on September 11, 2001. You did didn’t you? Why? Because your mind remembers what you see, and only about 10% of what you hear. You have to clarify the truth you proclaim in the minds of your listeners.
This is the main reason you will often hear people comment that they got more out of the children’s sermon than the regular one?usually it’s because the children’s sermon contains an illustration in either story form or as a visual aide that helps the listener remember. Nothing is too simple to drive the point home.
POWER
Every one of us knows that the source of our power when we communicate is the Spirit of the Lord. The question is how do we best allow the Spirit to use us? The answer is simple; BE YOURSELF! God made you the way you are for a reason. He put you with the youth you are with for a reason. He will work through each and every one of us most effectively when we allow the students to see who we really are.
Being genuine is often the toughest part of speaking. The challenge comes in the fact that we let other agenda’s get in the way. Agenda’s like: “I want the kids to like me” “I have to speak for 30 minutes” “I want to show the kids how smart, or funny, or creative, or fill in the blank I am.” When we are honest, transparent, appropriate, and authentic, we create the fertile soil the Spirit needs to touch hearts.
The Spirit does the work, our job is to get our egos out of the way and allow him to use us whether we’re bold or shy, funny or dry, a girl or a guy (sorry, I couldn’t resist). Be who God made you to be and watch Him work miracles in your ministry.
So, remember Focus on your nugget, Clarify with illustrations, and rely on His Power through you, and you will be a power instrument in the Kingdom of God.
God’s BEST to you!
