Featured Article: “Do You Feel Me Nephew?” Teen Lingo in 2004

by Jonathan McKee
February 10, 2004

Did you just say “My Nephew?” Are you fo’ rizeal dawg? Don’t front like you’re a playa when really you’re just a busta. Even posers can be blingin’ new spinners on their whip, but that don’t mean they got game!

Okay, so every teen doesn’t use this much “ebonics” in their vocabulary. But this generation is growing up in a world where hip hop/R&B is dominating the Grammy’s (2004 album of the year, song of the year, etc.), influencing culture, and yes, even affecting the way kids talk. And if you don’t believe me, turn on Nickelodeon and watch the commercials, or walk on your local campus and listen to what kids are saying. Sure they might not add a “z” to the middle of every word like Snoop, but they just might say farewell with a “keep it real.” And they probably would refer to all the “bling bling” in Trumps apartment from the previous night’s The Apprentice. While this might not be today’s American teen’s entire vocabulary, this is definitely becoming “part” of their vocabulary.

Maybe the kids you work with wouldn’t get near anything hip hop. They might refer to each other as “Brah” or maybe even talk about “lookin’ for some dank — not that shwag Matt brought last week.”

What are they saying? Do all kids really use this language? Is it important for us to even know?

Glad you asked.

Something You Can Use: New Teen Lingo Page

This week we just updated our Teen Lingo Page to better serve you. The Source Teen Lingo Dictionary now has over 450 words defined. Not only have we added 200 more terms, we even reformatted the page so it’s easier to navigate and find the terms you’re looking for. View the entire dictionary at once, or just one letter of the alphabet at a time.

I ran most of these new words by one of THE SOURCE’s Affordable Speakers, David Williams. David keeps current with where teens are at today, relentlessly sharing the love of Christ as a youth speaker in churches, schools, colleges, juvenile institutions, and camps throughout the U.S. David helped us keep this list current. Something You Can Use This Week: Valentines Day Activities

by Jonathan McKee
February 10, 2004

Cupid
Make a heart-shaped target and fasten it to a guy’s back. Give his girlfriend a toy bow and arrow (with suction cups on arrows). She stands about 20 feet away and is given 6 arrows. The idea is that she must hit the heart on her boyfriend’s back, if she loves him. Every time she misses, the boy gets a pie in the face. (Note: Bow and arrow should be the toy store variety. You can use toy pistols with suction-cup darts, also.)

Valentine Toe Freezer
For this game you need as many buckets of ice water (or snow) as you’ll have teams, with equally distributed candy hearts in them. Break your group into 4-6 person teams. Have them remove their shoes and socks and sit in a circle of chairs with the bucket in the middle. Instruct the teams that on “Go!” they are to quickly as possible “fish out” the candy hearts with their feet. The first team with all their hearts out (on the paper plate or towel you’ve provided) wins. Give fresh candy hearts as prizes. A twist: the first team to remove all the hearts and read them wins.

Balloon Bite
Two couples race to see how many balloons they can pop by biting them as the balloons are placed between them. Have some balloons with shaving or whipped cream in them. Go fast and have each half of room count out loud for their couple.

Guys Best Pick-up Line
To sell this one you may tell a quick disaster date story about asking someone out, telling the crowd that you will need their help. To do this, reenact your scene by building a couch out of three folding chairs covered by a LARGE sheet or blanket (it must cover all the chairs well). After building the couch in front of them, pick a girl to sit on the end chair. Then pull up three guy studs to come give you their best line and move. Demonstrate for them that it all counts here – talk, walk, distance from the girl – that when told to do so they will enter the room one at a time, walk over to the girl, deliver their best line, and sit right next to her with their arm around her. After explaining and demonstrating, briefly send them out of the room. While they are out of the room, pull out and hide the middle chair, replacing it with a pillow on the ground under the sheet. Stand on one end of the sheet while the girl remains on the other end. When the guys deliver their line and begin to sit down, both you and the girl release pressure on the sheet so they will fall right through. Note: the person who takes them out should have three lines ready for the guys in case they can’t think of one. Make sure you build them up afterward! The point: Great game to precede a talk on dating or sex.
