Jonathan's Answers to Tough Questions
I am a 19 year old female and the pastor's oldest daughter. I'm a junior at Delaware State University. I really do have this deep passion for young people. I am thinking about beginning a youth ministry that would meeting once a week regularly and then maybe twice a month doing a special activity. My question is seeing as though I'm about the same age (and there are some even older than I am) as the young adults that I want to minister to, how do I get them to be interested? Is it really appropriate for me at this age to begin a youth ministry. I am sincerely praying for God's direction about this. But I would like for your opinion.
Thanks for the email.
First, I think it’s always fine to work in a ministry reaching your peers. I’ve seen jr. highers reaching other jr. highers, why not college students reaching college students.
It sounds as if you want to start a college ministry. I think the best place to start is to seek out existing college ministries and check them out for a while. I'd go to the nearest church with a hot college group. Attend and jot down what you liked- and didn't like. Then look up Campus Crusade for Christ and do the same thing. Then Intervarsity- same thing. Chances are that you might end up liking one of these ministries and just join up with them. Why reinvent the wheel?
Or you might walk out with some great ideas of something you want to do.
Hope that helps.
