Featured: It Doesn't Get Any Easier Than This to Win a Free Book! Just Rate/Post a Comment on One of our Movie or Music Discussions... and Your Name Goes in the Hopper to Be One of 10 Winners of Your Choice of Jonathan's Books!

Jonathan McKee "Okay... I feel like giving some books away!" -Jonathan

I'm going to give away 10 of my books. Ten people will win a book of their choice (any one of my seven books currently in print) ...and winning is very simple. Here's how to play. We just totally revamped our new MOVIE CLIP DISCUSSIONS page and our MUSIC DISCUSSIONS page on our TheSource4YM.com site. These pages are awesome! Now they are each organized by the song/movie (songs can also be organized by artist), topic of discussion, and rating.

So here's what I want you to do:
I want you to peek at some of these resources- just give a few of them a solid read-through. Each of them provides small group questions, transition statements, wrap ups, etc. (all you need, really). Read em, then post a comment and rate em! (Choose 1 thru 5 stars.)

For some of you, this will be easy. You can start by just rating/commenting on the MOVIE CLIP DISCUSSIONS and/or MUSIC DISCUSSIONS you have already used with your group. Let us know how the discussion went. Rate them suitably. I just did this myself on the Movie Clip Discussions page. I organized the list by Title, selected the "Batman Begins" discussion (my absolute favorite), made a comment and rated it. Batman Stars

Each time you post a comment and rate one of these resources... I'll put your name in the hopper for a free book. Yep. If you rate 15 of our resources... your name goes in there 15 times!

I'll draw 10 winners in a few days at the end of this week, then post the winners in my blog (make sure you subscribe to my blog ). Winners can select any one of my 7 books in print (see below). So rate/comment as many of those discussions as possible!

What are you waiting for! Jump on our MOVIE CLIP DISCUSSIONS page and our MUSIC DISCUSSIONS page now and start rating/commenting!

Something You Can Use This Week: Use our Free "Big Game" Quiz for your Super Bowl Sunday Parties!

We do it every year-we provide you with a unique quiz that you can use at your "Big Game" party during the Super Bowl!

A READY-MADE "BIG GAME" PARTY for Super Bowl Sunday

First, make sure you are up to date with the legalities of what you can and cannot do at a "Super Bowl" party... such as, "Can you even call it a ‘Super Bowl' party?!!" Actually... nope! You can't! CLICK HERE for my blog yesterday with all the details!

Once you know the skinny... plan your party! Here are the basics on what to do:

WHERE:
You need to find a place to host the party! You can use your church's youth room (if you have a TV source), you could rent a place, or you could ask to use a church member's home. Unlike previous years, there are NO restrictions on the size of the screen or the number of screens you can use. Think BIG!!

WHEN:
Super Bowl Sunday of course, this Sunday, February 6, 2011. (I'll be in the Chicago Ohare Airport! DOH!!!! At least I'll catch the first half of the game in the terminal!)

PRIZES:
That's right-grab some cool prizes to give away. (Let your students know ahead of time they can win prizes... they're a great draw for your party!). Dinner certificates, iTunes gift cards, ski tickets, sports memorabilia, free registration on upcoming youth ministry trip, etc. all work great for prizes. Or, if you don't have resources/funds for those kinds of prizes, there are always SNICKERS, MILK DUDS and DING DONGS! The prizes go to those who do best on the "Big Game Quiz." You'll see . . . keep reading!

COST:
It's gotta be free! You can't charge money for a television or movie event. But you can do a "BRING YOUR OWN..." event- your basic POT LUCK. (For example, girls bring a 2 Liter and guys bring a bag of chips. Or you can have each age group bring a certain type of food.)

SUPER BOWL DAY AGENDA:
The agenda for this event is pretty easy. You give them a quiz (see BIG GAME QUIZ below) as they enter the party. They have to fill it out before the game begins because some of the questions have to do with the beginning of the game, like coin toss. Don't allow anyone to fill out the quiz past kickoff- they'll have an unfair advantage with the final score, etc.

Then you just let everyone enjoy the game (while one of you keeps stats for some of the answers to the quiz- keep reading). . You can also interject a few "Super Bowl Challenges" from our "Up Front Games" page and give a few prizes away. Then at the end, tally up the quizzes and give away the grand prizes.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: Yes, YOU have to note certain stats during the game to complete your answer key, then tally the quizzes right there at the party so you can award the winner immediately.)

It's a great event where students can get to know each other. For More "Big Game" Party ideas from prior Ezines CLICK HERE.

ABOUT OUR ANNUAL BIG GAME QUIZ

A Super Bowl Competition for Your "BIG GAME" Party: The BIG GAME Quiz... A Football-knowledge Quiz For All!

IMPORTANT NOTE: THESE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE PERSON GIVING THE BIG GAME QUIZ? NOT the kids

The quiz is one of the fun aspects of the party. This is the quiz that you give each student as they walk in the party. The quiz asks some basic football knowledge questions, and some questions specific to the game that day. A lot of the questions are just plain luck- like who will win the coin toss, or whether Coke or Pepsi will have the first commercial. Other questions might ask who will get the most yards, etc.

Have students take the quiz before they enter- and -IMPORTANT- have a group of staff take notes during the game, filling in the answers, and then have them tally up the scores as the game ends. (Some of the answers won't be complete until the finish of the game. i.e.: Who is going to win?)

I've made up a possible quiz for you with the help of my die-hard football-fan friend Todd Pearage (A Steelers fan, no doubt) who most of you know from our MOVIE REVIEW page. Feel free to also look at www.nfl.com or www.superbowl.com for more good information on the teams, half time shows, etc. so you can add, change, or verify more quiz questions.

PLEASE READ THIS: I say again- because every year some people email me after the event and ask us for the answers. WE DON'T PROVIDE ALL THE ANSWERS... because we can't. That's the purpose of this quiz, to tally it during the game and give away the prize at the end of your party. Most of these answers are determined during the game- and you'll need someone to take notes during the Super Bowl game to make your answer key for correcting the quizzes at the end! We only provide answers to the questions that will not be determined during the game. Also- DON'T print out the answer key (below the quiz) for the kids. (Yeah... duh! But you would NOT believe how many people email us every year about both!)

Youth Culture Window: An Inside Look into Lil Wayne and What Kids Are Gleaning from Him

Lil Wayne's Big Plans
Goodbye Prison, Hello World
An article from David R. Smith at TheSource4YM.com

Lil Wayne was recently given time off for good behavior, shortening his prison sentence from 1 year to 8 months. Now free, his streak of bad behavior seems to be making up for lost time.

So, how will the loosed Lil Wayne affect teenagers?

Lil Wayne, Big Pain
His parents named him Michael Dewayne Carter, Jr., but his self-appointed moniker is Lil Wayne. He's probably the most recognized persona in hip hop music these days, even though he just spent the last 8 months serving a sentence for weapon possession. In fact, on the bio page of his official website, he declares himself "the best rapper alive today."

Lil Wayne He's been making music since he was nine years old. In the 90's, he hitched his wagon to Cash Money Records, releasing his first solo album entitled Tha Block is Hot, which sold in excess of one million copies. He went on to release several more albums, but he would have to wait until 2008 to become the international superstar he is today.

When he released Tha Carter III in 2008, the music on the album simultaneously put him on two lists: Billboards Top 10, and parents' most-hated. Tha Carter III sealed Wayne's fate as a megastar, even if a foul one.

At the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, he captured Best Hip Video, and at the Grammys, he took home Best Rap Album for Lollipop, a song about...well...just take a look:

Man, she ain't never had a love like mine
And man I ain't never seen an a-- like hers
And that p---y in my mouth had me loss for words
Told her back it up like erp erp
And I made that a-- jump like jerk, jerk
And that's when she lick me like a lollipop (oh yeah I like that)
she lick me like a lollipop (I like that)
she lick me like a lollipop (I like that)
she lick me like a lollipop

You probably get the point by now, but just in case you still think Lil Wayne's Lollipop is about kid's candy, you can check out the rest of the song's lyrics to learn otherwise.

He's as infamous for his music as he is his (continual)
run-ins with law enforcement agencies. His most public offense took place in July of 2007 when police officers stopped the celebrity's tour bus in New York and arrested the rapper for possession of a weapon – a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol – a felony in that state. The aftermath of this legal ordeal resulted in the previously mentioned one year prison sentence (shortened to 8 months) that seemed indefinitely delayed by multiple, almost comical, reasons. Lil Wayne would ultimately serve 242 days in the New York City Correctional Institution for Men.

But how would prison affect him?

Life Behind Bars
The February 3, 2011 issue of Rolling Stone reported that Lil Wayne stayed quite busy behind bars. For starters, Lil Wayne's musical posse visited him in jail, with the exception of fellow rapper T.I., as that would be a violation of his own parole stemming from illegal possession of machine guns and silencers.

The imprisoned Wayne found a way to actually release an album while in the slammer. I Am Not a Human Being dropped September 29, 2010 just before his release from prison.

In Cell 23 of section 3-Upper, Lil Wayne also did a lot of reading. He spent significant portions of his day perusing a few of the several hundred pieces of daily fan mail. A website was even launched so he could keep in touch with his fans; it's called www.WeezyThanxYou.com.

But he also read books. Rolling Stone reports on page 47:

He read a lot. Mostly biographies: Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Joan Jett, Vince Lombardi. He really liked Anthony Kiedis' Scar Tissue – "That one was really good." And deeper stuff, too. "I read a book about 2012 and the Mayan apocalypse. I read Confucius' Odes, the Tao Te Ching or Chung or however you say it, the whole Bible. That was my first time reading the Bible ever."

His hermeneutical analysis?

"It was deep! I liked the parts where some character was once this, but he ended up being that. Like he'd be dissing Jesus, and then he ends up being a saint. That was cool."

I assume he means the Apostle Paul???

Regardless, the Bible, nor his stint behind bars was sufficient to rehabilitate him or incline him towards obedience; he was caught...
