Outreach Event Ideas

Human Sundae Fight
Note: This one is very messy and you will need to take precautions that prevent this awesome outreach idea from costing you relational damage within your church.

The idea is to invite lots of un-churched friends to come out, bring a sundae topping like chocolate or caramel, and have a blast in our Human Sundae Fight. Here’s how you can pull it off.

A few weeks out, tell your students that on a particular night, you are going to host a Human Sundae Fight. Strongly encourage them to bring a friend, and the only entrance fee is a half gallon of ice cream or an ice cream topping of their choice. (They can bring ice cream, chocolate syrup, caramel, whipped cream, etc.) Advertize it every single time you are together until the event.

When everyone arrives, collect the “fees” at the door and set them in a place where they can safely melt. Anywhere outside works GREAT!

Then, get some ice cream games off the Sick and Twisted page, and allow everybody to have some fun before the main event. I did my message using a sundae as a prop.

After the serious part of the night, we escort everyone outside for the Main Event. Tell them to bring their personal stuff with them (purses, jackets, Bibles, etc.) so they do NOT have to go back inside afterwards. Do the fight out in the yard/lawn towards the end of the meeting. After the fight, have warm water hooked up to a hose and LOTS of paper towels handy. Also, if you give all of the kids black plastic bags to wear home, like ponchos, moms and dads will LOVE you!

Finally, have a clean-up team on standby to help the next morning for a couple of hours. Their job is to get the yard/lawn, and usually some windows, back into shape. Plus, this makes you look responsible to the church leaders AND fun to the kids!

Enjoy this one summer after summer at your church!

Possible Message Outline:

You’ve got to remember that a lot of new kids will be there. Kids that do not know God or you. Here is what a very brief outline of a message “could” look like.

Introduce yourself and talk about your youth group a little

Introduce the concept of sin
-define it
-give a couple of RELEVANT examples
-God doesn’t like it when we sin, because it breaks His heart

But everybody likes ice cream sundaes, right?
-quickly make up a couple of ice cream sundaes in front of the group
-talk about why they taste so good
-list all of the tasty ingredients you are tossing on (syrup, nuts, candy)
-and now, these sundaes are PERFECT
-would anybody like to try one and just make sure it tastes right?

(After the student(s) taste the sundaes and confirm their perfection)
That’s just the way God made the world, perfectly
-but sin messed it up
-even a little bit of sin messes us up big time

For instance, what if we added something to a sundae that does not belong?
-like sin does not belong in us
-how about we make a sundae using dog poop instead of brownies
-actually make the “new” sundae and then ask for volunteer eaters

What’s the matter? No takers?
-nobody wants to eat this sundae?
-it only has a little bit of poop in it!
-nobody!?

Poop ruins a sundae just like sin ruins us

Read Isaiah 1:18

The Bible tells us that God wants to talk to us about…us
-how cool is that?
-in that conversation God tells us that His heart breaks for us when we choose to sin
-but the good news is that He is willing to forgive our sins if we choose

Explain the work of the cross
-extend an invitation to students to receive Christ as Savior
